In the first three months of 2023, an estimated 235 million tourists traveled internationally, more than doubling the total for that same period in 2022, according to the World Tourism Organization. With international arrivals at 80% of pre-pandemic levels during the same period, tourism appears well on its way to a post-COVID recovery.
Meanwhile, as more and more people return to their pre-pandemic vacation destinations – or take a trek to a new location – some are likely to hit the road solo. But where should they go?

A companion to the overall 2023 Best Countries rankings from U.S. News, the 2023 Best Countries to Travel Alone rankings are drawn from a survey of more than 17,000 people across the globe. They specifically highlight countries based on respondents’ perceptions of them in relation to seven attributes: culturally accessible, fun, friendly, pleasant climate, safe, scenic and unapproachable.
